What You鈥檒l Learn

Start enhancing your classroom skills with learning and assessment techniques, action research methodology and the role of technology in education.

Then, in the program core, build on your previous learning and experience with an in-depth exploration of teaching strategies and methods in language arts, math, science and social studies. You鈥檒l also learn how to empower and engage students who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. 

Program electives allow you to qualify for Online Teaching and Learning, ESOL, Reading, Gifted, Teacher Support and Coaching, or Teacher Leader In-Field Graduate endorsements.

The MEd in Elementary Education program is open to those with a bachelor鈥檚 degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for all previous undergraduate and graduate coursework.

You must also possess or be eligible for a renewable Georgia Level 4 certificate in Elementary Education or possess an equivalent out-of-state teaching certificate in Elementary Education. 

Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia Level 4 teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.

  • A statement of purpose, no more than 500 words, indicating your reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission to this program relates to your professional goals. Please submit to gasc@georgiasouthern.edu.
  • A completed 鈥淒isclosure and Affirmation Form鈥 that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators and tort liability insurance. (This is included within the online application.)

Application Deadline

Students are admitted to begin the program only in the summer term. The application deadline is March 1.

Your application and all required documents must be received by the deadline.

Provisional Admission

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of 鈥淏鈥 or higher in their first nine (9) hours of coursework after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.

The MEd in Elementary Education is an approved program of study by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) and meets the PSC鈥檚 certificate upgrade requirements.

The College of Education anticipates that graduates of the Elementary Education MEd program will seek state licenses or certifications.
