Building from your existing special education knowledge and experience, you鈥檒l consider evidence-based practices and their applications at an advanced level and strengthen your skills in research and leadership. 

In a concentration related to your area of certification, you鈥檒l deepen your expertise and expand your toolbox of evidence-based practices. In turn, you鈥檒l be equipped to identify student needs, plan and implement effective classroom strategies, work collaboratively with parents and community members to improve programs and outcomes for all students, and use technology as both a learning tool and an adaptive or assistive device.

Focus your studies on your current certification. Your concentration adds to the program鈥檚 core courses to enhance your understanding of effective classroom strategies and help you foster encouraging learning environments for all students.

Adaptive Curriculum

Gain additional tools and insights to support students with moderate to severe disabilities, exploring assessment methods and communication. This concentration includes coursework for an autism endorsement.

General Curriculum

Designed for those working with students with mild disabilities, this concentration teaches broadly applicable skills and includes coursework for an endorsement in autism or reading.

The M.Ed. in Special Education program is open to those with a bachelor鈥檚 degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for all previous undergraduate and graduate coursework.

You must also possess or be eligible for a Georgia Level 5 certificate or its equivalent in special education with certification in either adaptive curriculum or general curriculum.

  • A statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies your reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to your professional aspirations.
  • A completed 鈥淒isclosure and Affirmation Form鈥 that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators and tort liability insurance. (This is included within the online application.)

International transcripts must be evaluated by a and must be a course-by-course evaluation and include a GPA.

Application Deadline:

Students are admitted to begin the program in the summer term only. The application deadline is April 1.

Your application and all required documents must be received by the deadline.

Provisional Admission:

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of 鈥淏鈥 or higher in their first nine (9) hours of coursework after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the Department of Elementary and Special Education to be converted to regular status.

Special Education Program is a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)-accredited program aligned with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards for Advanced Programs, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Advanced Preparation Standards and the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Model Core Teaching Standards.

The College of Education anticipates that graduates of the M.Ed. in Special Education program will seek state licenses or certifications.

If you are a bachelor鈥檚 degree student interested in the special education M.Ed. program, you may be eligible for the accelerated bachelor鈥檚 to master鈥檚 (ABM) pathway. 

ABM programs allow you to begin graduate studies during the senior year of your bachelor鈥檚 degree so that you can accelerate the completion of all master鈥檚 requirements. You鈥檒l earn both a bachelor鈥檚 and a graduate degree faster. And since any graduate courses taken as an undergraduate are billed at the undergraduate tuition rate, you鈥檒l save money, too.
